Mexico City is one of the biggest cities in the world. Visitors can expect a colourful mix of sun, adventure and fiestas with many contrasting elements woven together, old and new, splendour and hardship, romance and modernity – it’s as if you are spinning faster and faster on a carousel! However, don’t worry you won’t get dizzy in Mexico City- the people there will already be looking after you with their well adjusted friendly ways. Mexico city can easily be discovered with cheap car hire in Mexico.
Mexico City is flanked by the famous twin volcanoes, Popocatépetl und Iztaccíhuatl, both over 5000m high. The city itself is situated in a valley which is on average 2300m above sea level. It certainly takes some getting used to! For the people of Mexico, their history is split into 2 blocks. The time before Columbus and the time after Columbus. In the 1300’s Mexican aborigines built an impressive city with excellent infrastructure and enough space for a population of 300,000. Up until a certain Hernán Cortés landed on the coast and marched in on Tenochtitlan, the pioneer of Mexico City. From this point in time everything changed and much of the old traditions of the aborigines simply disappeared. Beautiful Temples, pyramids and palaces have been preserved and can be marvelled at in and around Mexico City. It’s no problem for the hire car drivers in case they want to look at some of the cultural treasures on the outskirts of the city.
The giant Templo Mayor is situated in the middle of the old town is perhaps a good starting point for a stroll around the city, so leave the hire car parked up saefly. The Aztec Temple is situated in the middle what is the most interesting and historical centre between the quarter in the West Tabacalera and Zócalo in the East. Most of the tourist attractions here are just waiting to be discovered. The Temple Mayor possesses a height of 60m and was one of the most important Temples of the Aztec reign. The upper platform was regularly used for human sacrifice. The Templo Mayor Museum informs visitors about the multi-layered culture of the Aztecs with lots of interesting exhibits and a detailed handmade replica of the area around the Temple. The museum goes on further into the historical centre with its numerous colonial buildings in the Baroque style, it was uniquely decided by UNESCO and declared the centre a World Cultural Heritage. Well recommended is a walk along Calle Francisco Madero, here you can find rows of historic pieces of jewellery. There are also remnants of the aborigines to be found- the Serfin museum has a grand display of Indian handicrafts, jewellery and clothing. A little further east you will come across an area with a collection of sights- the huge Cathedrale de la Asunción de Maria, probably America’s biggest holy structure, constructed over 300 years and the same again in combined architectural styles- all of these sights can be easily reached in your car hire.
