Understanding insurance and excess
What is an excess?
The excess (sometimes called a deposit or deductible) is the amount you remain responsible for if the vehicle is lost or damaged during your rental. It's stated clearly on your rental agreement and is usually held as a deposit — often as a pre-authorisation on your card — when you collect the car. Anything above that amount is covered by the rental company's insurance. Provided the car is returned undamaged, the deposit is released in full.
Booking with no excess
If you'd rather not have any amount held against your card, look for the “No Excess” option at step 2 of checkout. Where it isn't available for your chosen car, you can still add comprehensive excess cover at step 3; this is underwritten by Mondial Assistance and costs from 5.5€ per day, reducing your liability to zero in case of an accident or theft.
What's covered by each type of insurance
Liability Insurance is required by law in every country we operate in. It covers damage or injury caused to third parties — other vehicles, property or people — that you're legally responsible for. Cover is typically capped around 1,000,000€, and country-specific limits are listed under “Booking Terms & Conditions” at step 2.
Theft Protection (TP) limits your financial liability if the rental vehicle is stolen. As with any cover, an excess may still apply unless you've selected the no-excess option — the exact amount is shown under “Coverage/Insurance” before you confirm your booking.
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) reduces your liability for damage to the car itself in the event of a collision. It typically excludes windscreens, tyres, the underbody, and interior or exterior accessories, along with towing charges — so it's worth checking the specific terms for your chosen supplier if you're planning to drive off the beaten track.
