The most central city in England, Derby is situated on the banks of the River Derwent to the south of the Peak District National Park. Its early history dates back to an ancient Roman camp; the city now has a population of around a quarter of a million. The Industrial Revolution started here; to this day, aeroplane parts and trains are manufactured in Derbyshire. The area offers a warm welcome and good value for money with a varied cultural programme including cycling, film and theatre.

Explore the city - old and modern

Before finalising your car hire, why not browse through the attractive boutique shops, have a cup of tea served in local pottery in one of the quaint cafés or try a guided tour? The old gaol in Friargate is said to be haunted. The Derby Museum and Art Gallery is on The Strand, near the central library, while All Saints’ Cathedral near Irongate has Gothic and neo-classical architecture. Alternatively, for open space and greenery, Darley Park is ideal for a stroll or a picnic –concerts are held here from time to time, too. Later, with car hire organised, the sports-minded might like to visit the iPro Stadium, home to Derby County Football Club and situated east of Derby city centre. To the west, Pickford’s House museum displays Edwardian splendour and elegant interiors.
 

Formula 1 memorabilia, period buildings and the Peaks to explore with car hire

Donnington Park is well known for British Motorcycle Grand Prix and car events too, on its Formula 1 racetrack. Hire cars are not permitted! The site also has a motor racing museum. For the musically minded, concerts and festivals are occasionally hosted in the grounds, which are situated approximately 13 miles southeast of Derby on the A50 and A453 and quickly reached with car hire. Not far away is Calke Abbey, an impressive period building with extensive gardens and unique collections on display inside. Alternatively, the National Tramway Museum in Crich is in fact part of a period village, situated north of Derby near Matlock Bath. While here, the nearby Heights of Abraham are a ‘must see’ for many, with gondola cable cars over a limestone gorge to see the impressive woodland caverns. There is also a fossil museum. Finally, outdoor enthusiasts flock to Derbyshire for the Peak District National Park and walks on the Pennine Way.
