The most important landmark is Catedral de Santa María de la Sede, built between 1401 and 1519. It is the third biggest Christian cathedral after St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and St. Paul’s in London. Construction of this royal palace was started in the Middle Ages under Moorish rule, though during the following centuries it was altered, extended, and remodeled, adding oriental, gothic, and renaissance elements. The palace is surrounded by the royal gardens, a place of absolute tranquility right in the city.
