A 2,600 year history and a countryside that has not only inspired authors in their main works but is also the oldest city in France- the French capital of Paris strives to keep up with the city with regards to being a tourist magnet and is always playing catch-up! On an approximately 160 metre high limestone cliffs you will find the symbol of the city: the church of Notre-Dame de la Garde. The tower reaches 41 metres into the sky crowned with an 11 metre high statue of Mary. Inside mosaics and church paintings adorn the walls. The climb is really worthwhile, above all due to the fantastic view of the streets of Marseille and the Mediterranean.
The Canabière is the most famous street in Marseille: At one time with its splendid construction, it competed with Paris’ Champs-Élysées but later many of the houses became derelict. However, some years ago the city invested in the Canabière in order to transform some of the old buildings back into small cafes, restaurants and boutiques. At one end, the street merges into the Boulevard Longchamp. Here, you will find the Palais Longchamp- a huge magnificent building that once served as a freshwater storage facility. Today, you will find in the wings 2 museums: the Zoology and the Geological Museum as well as the Museum of Beautiful Art with its paintings from the 18th and 19th century. Around the buildings, you will find sweeping parkland with numerous water fountains and waterfalls- all these museums can be easily reached in your car hire.
In the Vieux Port, the old harbour there appears to be some magic that has been preserved from its earlier days: Here, fishermen negotiate with house wives over the price of their daily catch. Beyond the old harbour you will find the Quartier du Panier, the oldest district of Marseille. Here, you will find houses from the 16th century that are mingled in between new building and narrow streets. In the harbour of the third largest city of France there are lots of daily boat trips to the Îles d’Frioul- a small group of islands that are situated approximately 2km (1.2 miles) from the mainland. Only about 100 people live there. On the island of If, you will find the Château d’If that first served as a fortress, then a prison and today it’s a popular destination for day trips. On the island there are warning signs for the dangerous sea-gulls and rightly so. In March and April the birds defend their nest of eggs with all their might so it’s best to keep away. The Château gained popularity through the author Dumas as a part of his book "The Count of Monte Christo" is based here.
Cassis is situated 20km (20 miles) east of Marseille- direct in the Mediterranean. On rocky cliffs that are over 100 metres high, there is a castle where those of you that have a little more money to spare can reside in one of the exclusive holiday homes situated there. The city itself attracts tourists due to its casino, a museum and several art galleries. Wine growing is also carried out in the area. Between Marseille and Cassis extends the Massif des Calanques: Pointed outcrops of rocks stick out of the clear blue/green water. In many of the caves that have been created by the water- cave drawings and etchings were found- that are almost 30,000 years old. It doesn’t matter how you want to discover this natural beauty- whether on foot, in your car hire or by boat- you will find impressive sight overall.
Those of you that have a car hire will find lots of country roads in Marseille- that lie directly over the sea, through the green valleys of the Province and lead to the local fishing villages. Stop offs on secluded beaches or in a fish restaurant in order to enjoy "the catch of the day" and the best Bouillabaisse (fish soup) in France. It’s definitely worthwhile! But be careful: some of the roads are very narrow, often steep and can have tight curves. Magnificent buildings that shine and the typical countryside of the Province: In Marseille visitors will find lots of attractions just like in Paris. The close proximity to the sea and the typical countryside in the Province gives the city a charm all of its own and is all best discovered in your car hire! MCR wishes you a great journey with car hire in Marseille !
